Wickett's World - MLB Playoff Picks

Now that the wild card games are over and we can get to the Divisional series' rounds of the Major League Baseball Playoffs, I thought I'd offer my predictions out there.

Note: I picked Oakland and San Francisco in the WC games so I'm officially 1-1.

NLDS
San Francisco vs Washington. On one hand you have the team with the best record in the NL in the Washington Nationals. They're young, exciting and REALLY good and don't forget about. And then there's the Giants who have won 2 World Series titles in the last 5 years. Washington has truly been building for this. NOW is there time.

X-Factor: Washington P Doug Fister who won 16 games (after time on the DL) & has a 2.41 ERA after getting traded by Detroit in the offseason. He was AMAZING for the Tigers in the postseason and he'll do it again. I'm taking the NATIONALS IN 4.

Dodgers vs Cardinals. How do you bet against LA? They say pitching wins - They're rotation is LOADED with the Cy Young/MVP winner in Clayton Kershaw ALONG with Zack Greinke and the UNDERRATED Hyun-Jin Ryu. And then there's the Cardinals…who just…ugh….win because it's "The Cardinal Way"…PUKE

X-Factor: Yasiel Puig – his mistakes cost LA a run at last year's World Series. Will he play under control & be the dynamic player he's developed into or will his emotions get the best of him again? I'm taking the Dodgers in 5.

ALDS

Detroit vs Baltimore. Detroit made the biggest move at the trade deadline by acquiring pitcher David Price. LOOK AT THAT ROTATION – Scherzer, Price, Verlander, Porcello. YIKES. The Orioles' Nelson Cruz had a MONSTER season.

X-Factor: Detroit closer Joe Nathan. His ERA is 4.81. HE'S A CLOSER. Keep it together and the tigers will go to the ALCS. Fail? Well, do you remember LAST SEASON? I'm betting on the starters and an healthy offense- Tigers in 5.

Royals vs. Angels. WOW – what a game we all saw in the AL Wild card. Can KC have ANYTHING left, emotionally? The Angels are the bullies with the best record in baseball. Will they be able to handle the speed of Ned Yost's Royals?

X-Factor: LA's Josh Hamilton – he's back & (allegedly) healthy after missing 22 of the last 25 games. Which player will he be? I'm rooting for KC, but I'll say ANGELS IN 3

NLCS – Nationals over Dodgers
ALCS – Tigers over Angels
World Series – Nationals over Tigers – Doug Fister gets his revenge in game 7 for being traded.

Enjoy the playoffs!! Cheers...

Wickett's World - Janay blames everyone but her husband..and what's next for Ray

Why does Janay Rice blame everyone but her husband..and what's next for Ray?

I have 2 theories on Janay Rice, concerning the Instagram message she sent out on the morning on September 9th, criticizing fans, the NFL and the media (of course) for her husband, Baltimore Raven Running Back Ray Rice’s suspension. I’m no doctor, but here’s what I see.

Theory #1 – Janay didn’t write this. My guess? Ray himself wrote it or one of Ray’s “people” wrote it, trying to make it look like she’s not mad at the situation. It makes no sense why she would write it. She claims we’ve all ruined everything for them. Did WE punch you in the face? Perhaps she was forced to post this. Why? She posted it out of fear. Fear that her millionaire husband would leave her if she didn’t try to help clean up his image. Or maybe fear of what he’d do if she DIDN’T post it.

Theory #2 – Janay has seen domestic violence too many times before. I really hope that Ms Rice doesn’t view what her husband did as acceptable behavior. “We’re in love” and “He didn’t really mean it” stuff is CLASSIC battered woman material. I fear that she has grown up with domestic abuse in her family and views that as “normal”. I also fear that Ray sees hitting a woman as normal. It’s not.

If you haven’t seen the video by now, here's the FULL VERSION

There is NO acceptable reason to EVERY strike a woman. If conflict arises, WALK AWAY. Don’t tell me she was charging at him. He takes hits from Patrick Willis, Clay Matthews and other NFL stars. He’s a professional athlete in tip top physical condition. There’s no way that woman was going to strike him in a way that he was going to be seriously hurt. His left cross would’ve made Joe Frazier proud. Get out of the elevator and WALK AWAY.

What’s next for Ray Rice? Not much. Yeah, he’ll serve his suspension. Yeah, an NFL team will give him a shot in 2015. But what will a 28 year old running back who’s productivity has declined in recent years do? Not much. The NFL chews up running backs & spits them out. His productive years are gone. And so is his NFL career.
Cheers…

Wickett's World - The LSU game means A LOT for Bucky.

This game means a LOT.

Not breaking news, but the Wiscosin opener in Houston vs LSU is a MASSIVE game for about two dozen reasons. But I'll give you my top 3 (in no particular order)

A - Carry the Big Ten Flag. Let's be honest: The Big Ten has been a JOKE the last few years. There have only been a handful of "big" wins for the B10 over the 5 seasons and beating one of the top teams in the top conference would go a LONG way to restoring SOME pride for Big Ten fans. The same could be said for next week's Michigan State/Oregon game in Eugene, OR.

Fun Fact #1 - The Badgers are 1-6 in their last 7 bowl games.

B - National Exposure. Sure, the fans in this state all know how well Wisconsin has played recently. Their record over the last 8 years is very good. Bret Bielema was 68-24 in 7 years with 3 trips to the Rose Bowl (coached in 2) and Gary Andersen was 9-4 in his 1st year as head coach. However, the Badgers aren't looked at as an ELITE team in college football. Beating a team that IS looked at as ELITE, would go a long way. Plus, it doesn't hurt to beat a team a few hour from Houston, IN HOUSTON.

Fun Fact #2 - Houston has more LSU alumni than any city outside of Louisiana.

C - This could jump start 2014. Look at the Badgers schedule. It's bad. No, it's REALLY bad. This game was put on the schedule to hopefully get Wisconsin into the final four IF they can run the table. After LSU, they play NOBODY until the final 3 weeks of the season (Nebraska, Iowa & Minnesota). Bucky NEEDS this win to be in the national championship hunt. Lose? Well, you can kiss the "final four" goodbye.

Fun Fact #3- The Badgers don't play Michigan, ohio state or Michigan state. I don't know the last time that happend. I tried to look it up.

Have another reason why this game is so big for Wisconin? Tell me below!!

Cheers...

Wickett's World - THANK YOU!!

thank you! On behalf of the entire SportsRadio 1250 team, THANK YOU!! The 8th annual Perkins 1250 golf outing was amazing! I have so many people to thank.

Thank you to the Edgewood golf course staff, specifically John Freeman. Your course is always up to par (pun intended) and once again, in great shape. THANK YOU.

Thank you to our sponsors. Our presenting sponsor, Perkins - you've been with us a long time and i can't tell you how much we appreciate your support. To all of our other sponsors (there are too many for me to remember and i don't want to leave anyone out) - THANK YOU.

The 1250 team...and i don't just mean the guys you hear on the radio. MANY people behind the scenes make this event what it is. Our Program Director, Tom Parker is our head coach. Without him, we'd never get off the ground each year. . Deidre leads the promotions team and her staff and army of interns handle EVERYTHING, not only leading up to the event, but on the day of. Will & Zach are there at 4:30AM setting things up and they're there all day to make sure our shows stay on the air THEN they tear everything down. Our Sales team lead by GM Chuck Sullivan is directly responsible for coordinating all of our sponsors. And a huge shout out to the guys i share the mic's with. THANK YOU.

To our celebrities: Anybody could throw together a golf outing and ask people to come out and play. YOU make it special to play in the golf outing. Whether your're a member of the media, a former athlete, a coach, etc, YOU provide something to the 1250 listeners that no other outing can provide. THANK YOU.

Most importantly, to our guests. The golfers. The 1250 listeners. "Give Kids The World" is an amazing charity. Your generosity helps fund trips to Orlando for terminally ill children. I know it's a great day of golf and something we hope you'll always remember, more importantly, you're helping kids. This outing has grown each of the last 8 years and for spending your hard earned money on such a great cause, on behalf of GKTW, THANK YOU.

Selfishly, i want to recognize Dan "I've got this" Richards, Mr Yellow Ball (Scooter), Curt "I don't want to get out of the cart" Richards and the Birthday girl, Robin Richards. Dan, Curt & I have played together in this outing for several years and together we've formed a great relationship between SportsRadio 1250 and Tri City Hyundai. We didn't shoot well enough to win, but our 64 did tie that other team from Tri City, even though KISS FM's Leigh McNabb tried to bring them down.

I know that I'm forgetting someone or something but i'm exhausted right now. To everyone involved - Edgewood, Sponsors, my co-workers, celebs and YOU the golfers...on behalf of the 1250 team THANK YOU!!!!

I hope the 2015 Golf Outing gets even bigger.

THANK YOU!!

cheers...

Wickett's World - Remember Kato Kaelin? He LOVES the Brewers

Remember Kato Kaelin? For the younger 1250 listeners, Kato was a guest at O.J. Simpsons' house and was present the night Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were murdered. What you may not know is that Kaelin is from Milwaukee, went to Nicolet High School (class of 1977), and went to UW–Eau Claire. He's now an actor living in Los Angeles. Why am i blogging about him? Here's why: he's a huge Brewers fan...and a huge Ron Roenicke hater. I follow him on Twitter @Kato_Kaelin

There's this tweet... and this one... and the always popular... Kaelin is not alone. Lots of Brewers fans are critical of their manager...and that's weird. As far as I can tell, the Brewers are in 1st place as I type this with the 2nd best record in the NL. They just took 2/3 from 2 of the best teams in the National League (Giants & Dodgers). Are they a perfect team? No. Is RR a perfect manager? No. Is he above criticism? No. Does he always push the right buttons? Nope. He let's his guys play. He's encourages them to be aggressive. He doesn't flip out. He doesn't micromanage. And (this year) he's winning.

I'm 100% certain that this happens in every city where professional baseball is played and not just a "Milwaukee thing". But ask yourself, where did you think this team would be by now? The last 6 weeks of the season are gonna be really fun!! Enjoy the ride...even you, Kato Kaelin.

Cheers...

Wickett's World - Just because you're great, doesn't mean you can coach.

Today on Twitter, I came across a national TV host who claims that because Becky Hammon was named one of top 15 WNBA players of all time, that she'd make a good assistant coach with the San Antonio #Spurs. While I think it's great that a woman is getting a chance to coach in the NBA, I am VERY curious to see how she does. This national host needs to take a quick look around the rest of the great players who have hung up their shoes as players and tried to coach at the pro level. There are lots of examples of great players who suck as head coaches. Are there some who have excelled? Yes. However, most of the time the great ones have problems getting their message across.

Why? Because the great ones were lucky enough to be blessed with amazing skill and talent at their sport. Coaching is teaching.

Ask Wayne Gretzky how hard it is to teach someone to pass the puck like he did or score at will. THE GREAT ONE was 143-161-24 and never made the playoffs in his 4 seasons as the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Magic Johnson lasted 16 games and gave us the famous line: "Can you believe I’m the coach of the Lakers? What have I gotten myself into?”

Mike Singletary was a GREAT linebacker for the Chicago Bears. he was 18-22 at the helm of the SF 49ers and hasn't sniffed a HC job since dropping his pants and giving us this rant on TE Vernon Davis

There are more including: Bart Starr, Ted Williams and Isiah Thomas (to name a few).
Yes, I realize Larry Bird won coach of the year and Lenny Wilkins was a 9 time all star and one of the winningest coaches in NBA history. But let's not jump to any conclusions about a great WNBA player figuring out the NBA game.
Oh...and i sure hope new Milwaukee Bucks head coach, Jason Kidd, can buck the trend. He has 1 good year under his belt...let's hope he's got a few more coming around here.
cheers...

Wickett's world - Bucky to the top of the Big Ten?

After the Wisconsin Badgers were knocked out of the Final Four by the Kentucky Wildcats, lots of Bucky fans needed a little time before looking at next year. Some were real quick to figure out where UW fit in to next years Big Ten (and beyond) race. Personally, I needed a little time. I had to see what the top underclassmen in the B10 were going to, when it came to their NBA careers, specifically the current powers in the Big Ten. Let’s take a look at who left:

Michigan lost Big Ten Player of the year, Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III. Stauskas grew more from his freshman year to sophomore year than any player at that stage I’ve ever seen. He’s a top 20 pick. GR3 showed flashes of the player many think he can be. I don’t think he was very consistent. He probably should’ve stayed but who am I to judge? He’s a late 1st/early 2nd rd guy. Michigan will likely take a step back.

Michigan State’s Gary Harris went pro. When you’re the leading scorer on the trendy powerhouse team in the Big Ten, why would you stay? I think he’ll be a really good pro who will create on his own more than Tom Izzo allowed him to. Couple Harris leaving with Keith Appling & Adreian Payne gone to graduation and MSU will struggle to find points!

Ohio State is losing 2 big contributors from last years team: LaQuinton Ross & Aaron Craft. Ross was the teams’ leading scorer & rebounder. Craft was the team leader & the best on-ball defender in the country last year. Sorry, osu…you’re not as good either.

Indiana has lost 4 players from last years team either due to transfer or in Noah Vonlehs’ case, the NBA.

I’m sure there are others that I’m leaving out but with all that talent LEAVING the Big Ten, and most of Wisconsin’s team coming back? (Dekker, Kaminsky, Hayes, Gasser, etc - SG Ben Brust is the only major contributor UW will lose) Look out BigTen…the Badgers are gonna be TOUGH to keep out of the spotlight. Bo Ryan’s NEVER finished out of the top 4 in the B10 and I’d be SHOCKED if it started next year.

Cheers…
